1. International Women's Day 2013 Celebrated Across the World
i. International
Women's Day is celebrated across the world on 8 March 2013.
ii. The theme for
2013 International Women's Day is- A promise is a promise:
Time for action to end violence against women.
iii. On this day, the
President of India, Pranab Mukherjee laid emphasis on the monumental role of
women in designing the country.
2. Stree Shakti award for ‘Nirbhaya’ on Int.
Women's Day
i. To pay tribute to her courage and strength ‘Nirbhaya’
will be posthumously bestowed with the 'Stree Shakti' award on 8th March, which
is celebrated as International Women's Day.
ii. The family of Nirbhaya will receive the award from the President Pranab
Mukherjee.
iii. President Mukherjee
congratulated the women of India for their monumental role in shaping the
destiny of the nation.
3. World Bank chief to arrive India on March 11
i. World Bank President Jim Yong Kim is on a three-day visit to India beginning March 11 to gather
information on development challenges being faced by the country and look at
opportunities for enhancing its role in reducing poverty at an accelerated
pace.
ii. This will be Mr. Kim’s first visit to
India after taking over as President of the World Bank Group last July.
iii. During his visit, Mr. Kim will meet Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh, Finance Minister P Chidambaram and representatives of the
private sector and the civil society to discuss India’s major initiatives to
foster equitable growth.
iv. Mr. Kim will also visit Lucknow and Kanpur in
Uttar Pradesh to meet Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and see development
challenges in the State, which is home to the largest number of India’s poor.
NOTE:
i. The World Bank Group President visits India at a time
when it is rapidly urbanising, with 10 million Indians moving every year into
towns and cities from the rural hinterland.
ii. India is the largest client of the World Bank
Group.
4. Sibal inaugurates India’s First All Women’s Employees
Post Office
i. The
Communications and Information Technology Minister, Kapil Sibal has inaugurated
India's First All Women Employees Post Office at Shastri Bhawan in
New Delhi on the occasion of the International Women's Day today.
ii. All the counters of this
Post Office will be manned by women employees only.
iii. It will provide
services including booking of Speed Post, Registration, Sale of IPOs, Booking
of Money Orders and Sale of Stamps.
5. Postage Stamp Released on the Commemorative Sahir Ludhianvi
i. The President of
India, Pranab Mukherjee on 8 March 2013 released the Commemorative Postage
Stamp on Sahir Ludhianvi on occasion of his birth anniversary at Rashtrapati
Bhavan in New Delhi.
ii. Sahir Ludhianvi died
on 25 October 1980 and was a renowned Urdu poet.
iii. He was known among
the young for his poetry on beauty and love.
iv. Sahir Ludhianvi had
converged Urdu poetry into the film songs as well.
6. Deborah Won a Bronze Medal in Asian Cycling Championship 2013
i. Deborah from
India won a Bronze medal in the final of women's juniors of 500m cycle
event in Asian Cycling Championship on 7 March 2013 in New Delhi.
ii. 19-year-old Deborah
helped India claim its second medal in the Asian Cycling Championship 2013
which is ongoing.
iii. Gold medal was won by Korea's
Jang Yeonhee and Yu Shiou Cheng of Chinese Taipei won
the silver medal.
7. Smriti Mehra Won Hero Women’s Pro Golf Tour 2013
i. Smriti Mehra, the veteran
golfer won her second title in the fourth leg of Hero Women`s pro golf
tour 2013 in Mumbai.
ii. Smriti played a
round of one under 64 and finished with an overall score of 194 at the
Willingdon Sports Club.
iii. At the second position was
Neha Tripathi who completed with the final round score of one over 66
and an overall score of 200.
iv. Sharmila Nicollet
achieved third position with lowly six over 71 and a total score of 202.
8. India retains No. 1 in ICC ODI ranking
i. India retains the Number
One ranking in the latest International Cricket Council ODI rankings release in
Dubai today.
ii. The Men in Blue
have a chance to win the ICC Championship Shield and prize money worth $1,75000 on
the cut off date of April 1.
iii. India leads the
table with 119 rating points followed by Englandwith 117 points.
Australia and South Africa follow the top two teams closely with 116 and 112 points
respectively.
iv. Among the batsmen
Protean Hashim Amla is at number onefollowed by fellow countryman A.B.
Devilliers.
v. India’s Virat
Kohli is at number three followed closely by the skipper Mahendra
Singh Dhoni.
vi.
. Among
the bowlers, Pakistan Off Spinner Saeed Ajmal maintains his top billing
followed by his country man Mohammad Hafeez.
vii. India’s Ravindra
Jadeja is on number nine in the bowler’s
list.
viii. In the All Rounders
category, Pakistan skipper Mohammed Hafeez is the leader followed
by Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hassan. India’s Ravindra Jadeja has
climbed up to number five in this category.
9. South Africa can become ODI No.1
i. South Africa is currently at fourth but
can leapfrog India, England and Australia if it wins all five matches of the
series.
ii. South Africa enters the five-match One-Day
International (ODI) series against Pakistan at Bloemfontein Sunday with an
opportunity to reclaim the No.1 ranking in the ICC ODI Championship Table.
iii. South Africa has previously won the ODI Shield twice
in 2008 and 2009
iv. If South Africa wins the series 4-1, then it will move
ahead of England into second position and will collect a cheque of $75,000 to
compliment the prestigious mace and $450,000 which it has already won by
sealing the No.1 position in the ICC Test rankings.
10. Waqar
to be Hyderabad's bowling coach in IPL
i. Sunrisers Hyderabad have roped in legendary Pakistan
pacer Waqar Younis as its bowling coach for the upcoming Indian Premier League in April-May.
ii. "One of the greatest fast bowlers of all time, Waqar
Younis will be the bowling coach for SunRisers Hyderabad!"
iii. Younis was the bowling
coach of Pakistan and national coach till mid-2011.
